When it comes to choice how do we choose? You know as we think about how free we really and how and can choose what we want, when we want it. You start to realize how free you are. Sometimes the choices we make do not let us feel this way. When compared to other countries we as Americans share a sense of freedom we take for granted. When presented with choices we often want more if we do not like the options provided to us.
Like in the video with Sheena Lyengar on the art of choosing she tells about a time in eastern Europe where she offered subjects the choice of 7 different types of soft drinks and to them it was only one choice as it was all soda. When we think about it that is true it is only one style of beverage not 7 different type but when it is all said and done it is only soda maybe we see it as flavors or types but to them it is only 1. This really made sense to me. When I thought about it and looked at it from a different point of view.
When I think of all the choices we get to make or have to make it scares me sometimes. I was just reading a newspaper article about a young man who made a choice that he thought was right and now he is on trial facing 3 years in jail for his quick decision choice he made. Seems he was in a firefight in Afghanistan and a woman in a black dress approached the stopped trucks and was shot and killed. This young man made a choice that it was to save himself and his mens life based off a few details and little reaction time and now he stands trial is this fair? I have my opinion about it but seems the US Government has another. This man will forever have to think about his choices he makes.
A new choice that we as humans have to face due to science is wether to save a loved on from dying by removing life support. This is a choice I hope to never have to make, one hand you do not want the person to suffer and on the other you do not want to be the one responsible for their life ending.
Most often our ability to choose is based of values we have been brought up with. Lots of times we say to ourselves what would mom or dad do. Hell they even have made jewelry after this concept it is WWJD What would Jesus Do. This is about choices and how they affect us and it is designed to make us stop and think about the choice we are about to make. Maybe to slow us down in our thought process and get us to focus on the right thing.
